Spring Cleaning: Important Things to Remember

Now that winter is gone and life is finally making its way back into the early days of spring, it is time to do some maintenance work for your home to keep it safe and comfortable. Let's see what things you need to keep on your checklist for Spring.

Gutters and Downspouts

Make sure that your gutter is clean from any kind of debris including leaves, branches, and other objects. If your gutter is filled with debris clean them out as soon as possible. If your roofing is made of asphalt, check for roof deposits and remove them from the gutter. If you see other debris in the downspouts, use a garden hose to flush out the hard-to-reach objects. Tighten up any loose downspouts, gutters, and gutter straps in your house.

Exterior Paint

Watch for peeling paint and any surface where the paint might fall off. Make sure to scrape off chipped paint and clean the exterior walls using a pressure washer. You may need to repaint any surfaces from where the paint came off. This will prevent wood rot from any water damage.

Trimming Shrubs and Trees

If you have trees near your home, trim off any overhead branches that may cause structural damage to your house during a storm. Since branches and their leafs are the most common debris stuck gutters trimming will make gutter cleaning each year.

Before trimming, clean the cutting blades with a rag and bleach to avoid infecting the tree. When trimming the branches, trim them to at least five feet away from the house.

Improving Drainage

Make sure that water is not pooling up against the foundation of your house. Chronic water exposure to your foundation can create costly structural issues in the long run. The soil has to slope away from the foundation walls of your house by at least six inches for every ten feet. In order to create the slope, remove any debris and mulch from the soil. Slope and grade the soil accordingly and reapply the mulch.
